The aims of the IPD

The Institute of Psychotherapy and Disability (IPD) exists to promote access to psychotherapy to children and adults with disabilities. This is achieved through:

  • Training events targeted at clinicians seeking to work with people with disabilities
  • Collaborative work with psychotherapy, psychology and psychiatry accrediting bodies to ensure the treatment needs of people with disabilities are represented adequately in the training of clinicians
  • Development and dissemination of good practice guidelines at governmental and regional levels
  • Development and dissemination of practice-based research into the efficacy of psychotherapy with people with disabilities
  • Development of web-based resources through which psychotherapy to people with disabilities can be accessed
  • To provide a professional network and source of peer support
  • To advocate and lobby for psychotherapeutic treatments and approaches for people with disabilities.
